This is a national organization which provides opportunities for artists. It is based in Toronto.
The FCA is a national organization that works to promote Canadian artists through exhibition and education opportunities. They operate a gallery in Vancouver, and have local chapters located across Canada. The Calgary chapter is an active and supportive organization. The Federation dates back to 1941 and counts Lawren Harris among its early leaders.
Alberta Society of Artists
The ASA was founded in 1931 and counted among its early leader well known artists such as A. C. Leighton and H. G. Glyde. It is an active group, offering members exhibition opportunities, workshops, and a way to connect with other Alberta artists.
Visual Arts Alberta Association
This organization offers several avenues of support for artists – including very informative print and e-newsletters. They have an exhibition space in Edmonton, and a virtual gallery for members on their web site.
Leighton Art Centre
Located in the historic home of A. C. Leighton south of Calgary, this is a place where artists and art enthusiasts connect. They have regular exhibitions and educational activities, as well as a shop and a great location to visit on a weekend with a picnic lunch for some plein air painting.
CARFAC
CARFAC is the national representation for artists regarding professional issues such as copyright, contract law, exhibition fees, etc. There are local branches in many provinces – but as of 2008, none in Alberta yet. This is the organization that lobbies for artists’ concerns, and it is worth supporting for that alone.
A place to explore new subjects and see how others do this too…. A photo is posted every second Wednesday, with an invitation to painters to work from it and then send in their finished images… Interesting and fun!
