My paintings are inspired by my love of the outdoors. As a keen hiker, skier and kayaker, I take pleasure in the designs that I find in nature as I pursue these activities. After capturing the patterns that I find in the earth, water and sky with a camera, I use these images as references for my oil paintings which render the compositions at a scale that moves them toward the monumental. By presenting the images as large canvases, I hope to bring attention to some of the glory that exists in the natural world, which we tend to take for granted, or simply not notice.
I enjoy the way these captured images can function as not only representations of some aspect of a natural dynamic,
but also as abstract designs independent of their source.
The paintings play with scale, colour and pattern, moving what might be seen as mundane into the realm of something noble.
