Breezes over the Bay (diptych)
Quadra Island, BC
24 x 60 in
Oil on canvas

This was my second painting that focused on the effects of breezes on the surface of the water. As they flit across the bay they transform the colours reflected in the water from deep, transparent-feeling saturated interpretations of the colours on shore to streaks of opaque-feeling, less saturated colour. The image of the reflection is still there but it becomes more abstract. The horizontal element of the shoreline is echoed in the stripes of wind patterns.

"A fragrant breeze wandered up from the quiet sea, trailed along the beach,

and drifted
back to the sea again, wondering where to go next.

On a mad impulse it went up to the
beach again. It drifted back to sea.”
